Summer Reading Program 2008

Here at the Rowley Public Library We have completed another wonderful summer of reading. This year's 2008 theme was Wild Reads at You Library and we kicked up our heels in a very country western way. 158 of you registered for our Summer Reading Program. Between you all, you lassoed corrals full of minutes. It was also amazing to find that so many of you showed up at our exciting events and programs with so many other distractions offered by a summer’s day! Apparently, a busy and fun summer was had by all. Our hardy congratulations goes out to all of our readers and as you move into that inevitable school mode---happy trail guys!

Many thanks to the Friends of the Rowley Library without whose generous funding none of this could be possible. They are truly our unsung heroes. I would also like to thank the Rowley Cultural Council who provided us with two wonderful entertainers funded by LCC grants.

Last, but certainly not least, I would like to thank ALL involved in trying so hard to make this year's Vehicle Night come off. What a sad night that was for us all!  In nine years, we have had nothing but perfect weather. I guess our luck had to wear out eventually. But we will try again next year and look forward to all those happy and excited children as the get to sit on those monster trucks and sound the horns of a real live fire engine!

The Rowley Public Library has completed technology upgrades that will allow patrons to order materials from any of 35 member libraries of the Merrimack Valley Library Consortium. Patrons who have registered for this service over the phone or in person may now request or renew books, or download audiobooks directly to a computer or MP3 player. Click here.

The first service to be offered under Rowley Public Library’s new status as a full member of the Merrimack Valley Library Consortium is participation in the Overdrive digital audio book collection. Now you can check out and download audio books in the comfort of your own home at any time!
Over 500 titles are available, with about 50 new titles added every month. There is sure to be something to interest everyone in your family. In addition to popular authors and the latest bestsellers that may appeal to commuters, books from students’ summer reading lists are available, as well as foreign language instruction and other non-fiction. Homebound patrons will be able to access the collection with just an Internet connection and a library card. Busy parents who no longer have time to read can take in a book while driving to soccer practice or cooking dinner. Grandparents may enjoy listening to an old time radio program such as Jack Benny or Dragnet.

It is now possible to check out, download and return these books without stepping foot in the library building, any time of the day or night. Your Rowley Public Library card provides access, and the books can then be listened to on your PC via the Overdrive Media Console, or, in some cases, transferred to an MP3 player or burned to a CD. The books are currently not iPod compatible. To get started call the Rowley Public Library at 978-948-2850 or email info@rowleylibrary.org. Once your Rowley library card bar code has been entered into the system, all you need to do is click here to visit the overdrive site, then follow the simple instructions to download the software, take a tutorial on checking out and placing holds on digital audio books, and get started listening!

Note: if you have been issued a card from another MVLC library give us a call and we will update your account to show Rowley as your home location.

Help your neighbors out this winter by donating non-perishable food (please check the expiration date) as well as personal hygiene items and household cleaning products and paper goods. Donations may be left in the library lobby for delivery to the food pantry. The food pantry is located in the Baptist Church Parsonage at 153 Main Street. It is open Tuesday mornings from 10 am to noon. All Rowley residents are welcome.

New Photography to be Displayed in Gallery
Local photographer Jeremy Barnard has put together an exhibit of digital photographs documenting a 2002 trip to Scotland, his ancestral homeland. He endeavored to visit as many castles as possible in the two week adventure, particularly ones that were off of the beaten tourist track. His photographs walk a fine line between abstraction and realism. "My process of observation begins with a wide view of my subject, seeing it in it's environmental context. With the knowledge that my image will lack impact if I don't get close enough, I ask myself what it is about the scene that captivates me, and I move in to isolate that element." The resultant images possess the abstract qualities of shape and form. The photographs are on display at the Rowley Public Library through the end of the year. Library hours are Monday and Wednesday 10 am to 8 pm, Tuesday and Thursday 3 - 8 pm, and Saturdays 10 am - 2 pm. For more info on the artist at http://www.jeremybarnard.com/
